UAH Earns Win In Final Minute Over Henderson State

Box Score
PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team fought back from a six-point deficit in the final minute of play to earn a victory over Henderson State, 76-75, Saturday afternoon at the UWF Field House. With the win, the Lady Chargers improve to 3-1 while handing the Lady Reddies fall to 4-1.
With 43 seconds remaining in the game, HSU led by six and looked to have the game in hand after trailing for most of the contest. However, the UAH squad battled back, scoring nine of the next 11 points en route to the victory.

In the final minute of play, sophomore Jordan Smith found the bottom of the net on a three with 14 seconds left to cut the deficit to just one. On the following possession, HSU missed the first free throw of a one-and-one, which sophomore Jasmine Hammon rebounded and drove the length of the court to score the game-winning layup with five seconds remaining.

“From a coaching standpoint, I'm incredibly proud of our kids that they didn't give up,” head coach Roy Heintz recalled. “Its something that our kids have learned that you can never give up and you have to continue to fight. We got stops when we needed them and we converted with points.”

On the night, Hammon poured in a game-high 23 points to go along with 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the year and seventh of her career. Junior Natalie Kelley also notched a double-double – her first of the year – with 17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, while Smith added 20 points.

The Lady Chargers made 37.5 percent (27-of-72) of its shots on the night while Henderson State buried 43.1 percent (28-of-65) of its attempts. UAH outrebounded the Lady Reddies by a margin of 52-41.

UAH returns to action on Nov. 30, hosting Montevallo in a non-conference tilt at Spragins Hall. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
