Lady Chargers Fall to Shorter, 3-2

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville dropped its non-conference match with Shorter, 3-2, on Friday evening at Spragins Hall. With the loss, the Lady Chargers fall to 9-22 on the year while the Lady Hawks improve to 28-7 overall.

Even with the loss, UAH gained a career night from senior Jessica Ruple who posted a career-best 24 digs to go along with 14 kills. Senior Kaeli McCaghren joined Ruple with over 20 digs, leading the match with 25 digs. In addition, junior Kelsey Williams led the squad with a team-high 18 kills.

As a team, the Lady Chargers combined for an attack percentage of .155 while Shorter posted a slightly more effective hitting percentage of .216 on the night.

Each set of the match was decided by four points or less, including sets two and three requiring extra points. The first set went to UAH, 25-22, while Shorter evened the match with a 30-28 victory in the second game.

The Lady Chargers grabbed a close victory in the third set with extra points, 31-29, and was up 21-19 late in the fourth game, needing just four more points to clinch the match. Shorter picked up five straight points, however, to take a 24-21 advantage en route to a 25-22 victory.

In the fifth and deciding set, Shorter jumped out to a 9-1 lead but UAH took 10 of the next 15 points to cut the lead to 14-11 in the Lady Hawks favor. Unfortunately, Shorter took the next point and claimed the match-clincher by a score of 15-11.

Up next, UAH wraps up conference-play for the regular season as the Lady Chargers host Christian Brothers on Saturday at Spragins Hall at 1 p.m.
