Kyle Simmons the UAH men's soccer team pushed past visiting Montevallo 3-1 on Wednesday afternoon at Charger Field. The win moves the Chargers to 3-2-0 on the season while the Falcons fall to 3-1-1.
Putting the Chargers up early, Simmons took a perfect cross from
Felix Hjalmarsson and buried it near-side for the 1-0 lead in the 15th minute.
After the rest of the first half was a scoreless period, the visitors struck first in the second stanza as Jackson Tolleson headed the ball in off a corner in the 54th minute. The Chargers were determined to snatch the lead back, however, and
Mitch Wilson beat a pair of defenders just three minutes later and found Simmons right in front.
Using his head to fire it into the back of the net, Simmons tallied his second of the game and sixth of the year to put the hosts up 2-1 in the 57th minute. The sixth score for the freshman matches UAH's top goal-scoring performance from a season ago.
Icing the contest, Hjalmarsson headed in a ball off a free kick taken by
Jarrod Muggleton – the Reykjavik, Iceland, native's fourth of the season – to put the Chargers up by the eventual final in the 75th.
Jordan Steelman (1-0) recorded one save in picking up the victory in goal for UAH, while Brendan Ledgeway picked up the loss.
UAH outshot the Falcons on the night by a 10-8 margin, including a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal.
The Chargers will return to action on Saturday when they wrap up the season-opening homestand by welcoming Georgia Southwestern for a 3 p.m. tilt.
