Lady Chargers Split The Day At Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The UAH volleyball team ended a three-game slide with a 3-0 sweep of Augusta State on Saturday evening before falling to Montevallo 3-1 in a tri-match hosted by the Falcons. The Lady Chargers now sit at 4-8 on the year.

In the win over Augusta State, the Lady Chargers erased a 19-11 deficit, scoring eight straight points to pull into a tie and eventually they took a 22-21 lead. During the long scoring spurt, Kelsey Williams recorded two of her match-high 18 kills. UAH ended up taking the first set 25-23.

The momentum generated by the Lady Chargers carried into the second set as UAH pushed out to a quick 4-1 lead. The frame would be close, but the Blue and White never trailed and captured it by a 25-21 score. Carrie Brown recorded two of the final three kills for UAH in the second, and Wilson closed it out with one of her own for the 25th point.

The third and final set would be close, as well, with Augusta State enjoying the lead in the middle of the set at 12-10. However, the Lady Chargers used a 12-5 run to seize control and take a 22-17 advantage before eventually winning the stanza by a 25-23 margin.

Williams was particularly impressive in the contest as she registered the 18 kills on 32 swings while committing just two errors for a blistering .500 hitting percentage. For good measure she added an ace and was one dig shy of a double-double as she finished the night with nine digs. Brown joined her in double-digit kills with 12.

Kelly Wilson dished out 42 assists to pace the squad in helpers.

Defensively, the team out-dug ASU 67-59 thanks to a 15-dig performance from Kaeli McCaghren and a 14-dig showing from Jessica Ruple. Ruple also narrowly missed a double-double as she tallied nine kills on the evening.

In the second contest, Montevallo won by putting together set scores of 25-22, 15-25, 25-19, and 25-20.

Though they were outhit in the contest .232 to .173, in the strong second set the Lady Chargers hit at a .344 clip compared to just .174 from the Falcons.

Ruple did get her double-double in the day's second affair, registering team-highs in both kills and digs with 12 and 19, respectively. Angela Thurmond also collected double-digits in kills as she tallied 10.

Joining Ruple in double-figures in digs were Williams who dug out 13 balls and Kaeli McCaghren who tallied 11.

Wilson again led in assists as she picked up 39.

UAH will return to action on Friday when it begins conference play by hosting Valdosta State at 7 p.m. inside Spragins Hall.
