HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Playing a five-setter for the second time in the three games, the UAH volleyball team dropped a heartbreaking, yet thrilling, match to visiting West Alabama on Tuesday night inside a raucous Spragins Hall. The 3-2 loss drops the Lady Chargers to 5-10 (1-2 Gulf South Conference) while UWA improves to 12-3 (3-0 GSC).
After UAH took the first set by a commanding 25-15 score, the guests won the second and third by set scores of 25-17 and 25-23.
The fourth set saw the action intensify. With the Blue and White trailing 13-12, the team rattled off nine straight points with
Shelby League holding serve as the Lady Chargers built up a 21-13 lead en route to a 25-18 victory in the frame.
Riding the momentum generated from the fourth, the Lady Chargers grabbed the quick edge in the deciding set, building up as large as an 11-6 lead. But it was then that it was time for UWA's big run in the match, and the Tigers scored six straight to capture a 12-11 lead. After that point, the teams ended up tied on eight occasions as UWA fought off match point for the hosts four times before the Tigers were able to string together consecutive points for the 21-19 set victory to seal the match.
Outhitting the Tigers, UAH registered an attack percentage of .225 on the night – including a blistering .500 in the first set – while the guests hit at a .192 clip.
Four Lady Chargers ended the night in double figures in kills as
Jessica Ruple led the way with 15 followed by
Kelsey Williams,
Angela Thurmond, and
Carrie Brown who each tallied 12.
Kelly Wilson dished out 44 assists on the night.
Defensively,
Shelby League scooped out 17 balls for the game while
Kaeli McCaghren chipped in with 16 and
Kelly Wilson added 12.
UAH will return to action this weekend as it travels to New Orleans on Friday and West Florida on Saturday.
