HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team (12-2, 3-0 GSC) will take on West Florida (5-10, 1-2 GSC) Saturday evening at 5 p.m. CST at Spragins Hall as the squad looks to set a new standard for Lady Charger basketball.
Standing at 12-2 on the year, UAH is now just one win away from setting a new program record for the best start to a season. With a victory over UWF on Saturday, the Lady Chargers will become the first UAH women's basketball team in program history to boast a 13-2 record. The program's first season was in 1977-78 yet the only UAH team to match the 12-2 record was the 1982-83 squad that finished 27-8 on the year.
In addition, if the Lady Chargers earn the victory Saturday, they will extend their winning streak to six games, which will be the longest such streak since the 2002-03 season. A win will also keep the Blue and White perfect at home this season with a 7-0 record, matched only twice in school history by the 1982-83 and 2001-02 squads.
In its last outing, UAH knocked off Valdosta State, a team receiving votes in the
USA Today/ESPN Top 25 Coaches' Poll, by a score of 73-69 at Spragins Hall on Thursday. With that win, the Lady Chargers took over sole possession of the top spot in the GSC standings and moved to 3-0 in the league for the first time in school history.
UWF has three players currently averaging double figures in scoring, led by Sher'Ryan Scott with 13.6 points per game. Hanna Vette and Octavia Bearden are adding 13 and 11.7 points per contest, respectively. Bearden is also leading the team on the glass with 8.5 rebounds per game.
Historically, UWF owns a 25-18 advantage over UAH in the all-time series but the Lady Chargers have claimed four of the last six meetings between the two schools. UAH will be aiming for its third consecutive victory over the Argonauts after sweeping last year's contests by scores of 77-71 on the road and 81-77 at home.
