UAH Faces Delta State In Crucial GSC Contest

LIVE STATS | LISTEN | WATCH | UAH NOTES | DELTA STATE NOTES

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – For the second time in its last three contests, the University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team (13-2, 4-0 GSC) will face a team receiving votes in the USA Today/ESPN Top 25 Coaches' Poll. This time, UAH faces Delta State (9-4, 3-1 GSC) on the road in Cleveland, Miss., Thursday evening at 6 p.m. CST at Sillers Coliseum. The game will be broadcast on 97.7 FM The Zone in the Huntsville, Ala., area.

In addition, Thursday's contest will be the second time in three games the Lady Chargers will put their first-place standing in the Gulf South Conference on the line. UAH previously defeated Valdosta State, 73-69, on Jan. 12 when both teams were 2-0 in the league. If UAH can take down DSU, something the team has done just once in 10 attempts, the Blue and White will own a two-game advantage in the conference standings.

A win would also extend UAH's winning streak to a season-long seven games, which would be the longest such streak since the 1984-85 season and matched also during the 1982-83 season.

Delta State, the preseason unanimous pick to claim the league title, enters the contest after claiming six of its previous seven contests - the squad's lone conference loss is to Valdosta State. The Lady Statesmen are paced by the league-leader in scoring Veronica Walker who is averaging 19.3 points per game. Brooke Rhodes joins Walker in double figures, posting 13.9 points per contest. Walker is also leading the team on the glass with 9.3 rebounds per game.

UAH's fast-paced offense, ranked seventh in the nation in scoring, is sure to be challenged by DSU, ranked fifth nationally in scoring defense. Something must give as the Lady Chargers are putting up a league-best 80.4 points per game while the Lady Statesmen are allowing opponents to a league-low 50.7 points per game.

Historically, the Lady Statesmen own a significant 9-1 advantage over UAH, including defeating the Lady Chargers in seven consecutive meetings. In the last contest between the two schools, Delta State earned a 60-52 victory in Huntsville on Nov. 27, 2011. The most recent game in Cleveland went to DSU as well by a score of 78-52.
