Volleyball Set to Open 2012 Campaign Friday

LIVE STATS (Henderson State match)
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The UAH volleyball team is set to open their season this Friday, as they travel to Henderson State to take part in the 2012 HSU Classic.

The Lady Chargers will play two games on Friday (vs. Texas A&M-Commerce and Lemoyne-Owen) and two games on Saturday (vs. Henderson State and West Alabama).

After a 10-25 record a year ago, Head Coach Laura Taube hopes that the experience coming back and the incoming talent will play into better results.

“We're deeper on the bench, I feel very comfortable pulling a variety of players off the bench to make something happen,” said Taube.

UAH will start three freshmen, as newcomers Kennedie Lariscy (libero), Kendall Knisley (right-side) and Haley Snyder (left-side) will be expected to produce and compete at a high level right away to start the season.

Returning and expected to lead the 2012 team will be seniors Kelsey Williams and Kelly Wilson, along with standout juniors Angela Thurmond and Stacey Sargent.

Thurmond will start at middle-hitter this coming weekend. “She's worked really hard on getting better as a middle-hitter. She wasn't a middle when she came in, but she's done a great job in working to get better at that position,” said Taube. “We're looking for some good things from her.”

Coach Taube and this year's UAH team are hoping that it all comes together. The freshman play at a high level and bode well with the returners, while the juniors and seniors step their game up, and the Lady Chargers start producing wins.

The season opens up tomorrow afternoon in Arkadelphia, Ark., at 2:00 p.m. when UAH takes on Texas A&M-Commerce.

The first home game for the Lady Chargers will be next week Thursday, when they host their annual Country Inn & Suites Tournament. That game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. against Henderson State at Spragins Hall.
