Lady Chargers Bounce Back with Easy Win to Open Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The UAH volleyball team earned a split to open up their season on Friday evening as part of the 2012 HSU Classic, defeating LeMoyne-Owen 3-0 following a 3-0 loss to Texas A&M Commerce.
 
The Lady Chargers (1-1) bounced back nicely in their second game of the night with a convincing 3-0 defeat of the LeMoyne-Owen College Magicians at the Duke Wells Center in Arkadelphia, Ark.
 
Senior Kelsey Williams led the attack for UAH with 15 kills, while Angela Thurmond added 11 kills from the middle of the court. Williams finished with two aces and three blocks, while Thurmond knocked down four.
 
Williams and Thurmond, who are expected to lead the attack this season for Head Coach Laura Taube, finished with a combined 32 points.
 
Another senior was on top of her game, as Kelly Wilson set up the hitters nicely all evening finishing with 19 assists in the match. Ashton Baker also played a huge role as she racked up 15 assists to set up the attack.
 
UAH took the first set handily 25-7, and then dominated again in the second set with a 25-10 victory. The Lady Chargers would seal their first victory of the 2012 campaign with a 25-17 win in what would be the third and final set.
 
Kennedie Lariscy was solid the entire match finishing with a team-high 13 digs. Junior and Huntsville-native Stacey Sargent tallied six digs as well.
 
UAH held the Magicians (0-2) to just a total of 18 kills in the three-set match. LeMoyne-Owen was led by Jazzmyne Fentress, who finished with six kills and three blocks.
 
In their first match of the regular season, UAH fell to Texas A&M Commerce in straight sets (25-14, 25-21, 26-24). Commerce didn't take the match with ease however; as the Lady Chargers dropped the final two sets by a mere six points.
 
UAH is back in action tomorrow morning for day two of the HSU Classic, when they take on the host team in Henderson State at 10:00 a.m. followed by West Alabama at 12:00 noon.
