HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team continues Gulf South Conference play on Saturday when Delta State visits. Tip between the Lady Chargers (7-8, 4-1 GSC) and the Lady Statesmen (8-4, 3-1 GSC) is slated for 5 p.m. at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall.
The Lady Chargers remained perfect at home with their 79-60 victory over Christian Brothers on Thursday night, and the strong play in the Rocket City has aided the team in holding the second position in the conference standings.
Freshman
Halle Jarnagin recorded her second double-double of the season in the win over CBU, and in doing so, she took over the team lead in rebounding as she is averaging 7.8 boards per game – a mark that is good for fourth in the league.
Her performance – along with that of
Natalie Kelley who owns 7.6 rebounds per game and leads the team with 53 boards on the offensive glass – has helped the Lady Chargers have numerous second-chance opportunities, and the team sits second in the conference with 15.8 offensive rebounds per contest.
The two teams met three times last year with each team defending its home court, while the Lady Statesmen won big over UAH at the NCAA South Regional in Winter Park, Fla., to give DSU a 10-2 edge in the all-time series. In the 71-57 UAH victory at Spragins Hall,
Jasmine Hammon scored 25 points and recorded 10 rebounds.
The Lady Statesmen have somewhat struggled recently, dropping three of their last five games, but DSU was victorious 65-59 at Shorter on Thursday. Rhandi Ball paced the team with 17 points and nine rebounds in the game.
Sophomore Seneca Walton leads the team with a 14.1 points per game scoring average as she shoots 53.5 percent from the field.
