Box Score JACKSON, Tenn. – Kyle Simmons recorded a hat trick for the second time this season, the team recorded its 10th win, and the University of Alabama in Huntsville men's soccer team defeated Union by a 4-2 score on Friday night. The Chargers improve to 10-6-1 (8-6-0 Gulf South Conference), while Union slips to 3-11-1 (1-11-1 GSC).
UAH will now turn its attention to the GSC Championships where it will face West Alabama as either the No. 2 or 3 seed pending a result from Livingston on Friday night.
The scoring started early for the visitors as Simmons scored his first of the night in the third minute when a
Leo De Smedt free kick was played by
Mitch Wilson and then knocked into the goal by Simmons.
The assist marks the first collegiate point for De Smedt.
Simmons picked up his second goal of the night when the Union keeper misplayed the ball in the 18th minute, allowing Simmons to easily tap it into the back of the net to make it 2-0.
Union's Alex Pratt scored two minutes later in the 20th to cut the Charger lead in half, and the score would remain 2-1 through the rest of the first half and into the second half when Wilson would set-up
Yuri Ivanov in the 60th minute to make it 3-1.
Wilson's pair of assists give him a team-best seven on the year.
The hat trick for Simmons then would be completed 15 minutes later when Ivanov fed it to Simmons who was able to blow past the Union keeper who had come well out in front of his net, allowing the junior from Huntsville to notch his 15th goal of the season.
With the goal and assist, Ivanov now has 11 points on the year.
Union would tack on a late score to produce the 4-2 final as the Bulldogs applied some late pressure to end the game with a 16-15 advantage in shots, but the Chargers held an 8-3 edge in shots on goal.
The GSC Championships will start on Friday in Pensacola, Fla.
