HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team proved a tough challenge for the 11th-ranked team in the country, but in the end it was Delta State who took home the victory on Saturday afternoon as the Lady Statesmen won 78-69 at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall. UAH slips to 7-2 (2-1 Gulf South Conference), while DSU improves to 8-1 (3-0 GSC).
Â
Jordan Smith scored 20 points in the setback, while
Juanice Newton registered her second double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Â
The closeness of the game was especially impressive considering that UAH shot 29.3 percent from the floor on the night, but the team did collect 23 offensive rebounds en route to outrebounding the Lady Statesmen 46-43. The Lady Chargers also forced DSU into 37 turnovers and turned them into 24 points, but the visitors connected on 52.0 percent (26-of-50) of their attempts to earn the win.
Â
Not indicative of the tightness of the contest was the final score as UAH pulled to within two after a
Dina Saunders 3-pointer made it 68-66 with just 41 seconds left, but Delta State made 10 free throws down the stretch to produce the nine-point margin.
Â
Seneca Walton paced Delta State with 21 points and 12 rebounds.
Though no other Lady Charger would join Smith and Newton in double figures, a pair of players were key in aiding the team's performance on the glass as
Kendra Jones matched a career high with nine rebounds, while
Halle Jarnagin grabbed seven boards.
Â
UAH will now hit the road for three straight, starting with a contest at West Florida after the holidays on Jan. 4.
