FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – For the second consecutive season, the University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team is set to open play at the NCAA South Regional as the seventh-seeded Lady Chargers will take on the No. 2 seed Tuskegee at 1:30 p.m. CDT on Friday at the Don Taft University Center on the campus of top seed Nova Southeastern University.
UAH enters the contest with a record of 15-16 after capturing the title at the Gulf South Conference Championships and earning the league's automatic berth into the national tournament, while Tuskegee is an at-large selection to the field after posting a 19-6 record during the regular season.
The teams are familiar with each other as they met during the first weekend of the regular season at the UAH-hosted GSC/SIAC Challenge, and the Lady Chargers won big by a 73-49 score as both
Jasmine Hammon and
Jordan Smith scored 17 points.
The pair of Hammon and Smith along with
Bailee Robinson helped spark the Lady Chargers to the league's tournament championship as the team averaged 80 points a game during the three-game stretch at the event.
Shooting nine percentage points better than the season average, the team connected on 44.0 percent of its shots during the tournament, and the squad was also strong defensively as it forced the opposition to commit 49 miscues.
In addition to being familiar with the opponent on Friday, the squad also has already played at the NSU gym this season as it played the Sharks and Florida Tech in a November tournament.
Also, UAH has played four of the teams in the field this season and owns a record of 3-4 against those schools. In addition to beating Tuskegee, the Lady Chargers went 2-1 this year against Delta State while registering an 0-2 mark against North Alabama and also fell to Nova.
Prior to losing in the SIAC tournament, Tuskegee had reeled off a 16-game winning streak, and the team is led by Amelia Dorton and Nnenne Eze who are averaging 10.2 and 10.0 points per game, respectively. The Lady Chargers held both to single figures in scoring in the earlier meeting.
