Box Score VALDOSTA, Ga. – Falling short in their 2013 GSC-opener, the University of Alabama in Huntsville volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Valdosta State on Friday night on the road.
UAH (3-6, 0-1 GSC) won the first set of the match for the sixth-straight time this season, but the host Blazers (8-2, 1-0 GSC) ran off three straight to hand the Lady Chargers their third-consecutive defeat.
The opening set was dominated by UAH, as the team cruised to a convincing 25-15 victory.
Haley Snyder recorded the first kill of the game to make the score 1-0 en route to a six-kill set to lead all players.
With the score 17-14 late in the set, the Lady Chargers would go on a 7-0 run to essentially put away the Lady Blazers 24-17.
Olivia Bauman notched a pair of kills during that run.
The second set would prove to be the closest set of the night, needing 28 points from Valdosta State before their set victory by a final of 28-26. The match was tied late at 24-24, and after the two teams exchanged points, a pair of attack errors by Bauman gave VSU the set win, sending them on their way to a 1-0 conference start to 2013.
Again in the third set, UAH would have a chance late, but failed to make some key defensive stops to take the set. The Blue and White trailed 22-21, but allowed the hosts to smash a couple of kills and secure a 25-22 set win.
Valdosta State dominated the fourth set 25-15, as UAH never had an answer in their final set of the night.
Snyder led the way offensively with 16 kills, but notched a lowly .157 hitting percentage. Bauman finished second on the squad with 12 kills.
Stacey Sargent finished with a team-high 16 digs, while
Ashton Baker recorded 30 assists.
UAH will seek to finish 1-1 on their opening conference road trip tomorrow when they visit West Georgia for a 1 p.m. serve.
