Chargers Fall 4-1 in the Rain at West Florida

Box Score PENSACOLA, Fla. – Playing in wet conditions on Sunday, the University of Alabama in Huntsville men's soccer team fell to host West Florida by a 4-1 score. The loss drops the Chargers to 2-3-1 (0-3-0 GSC), while UWF improves to 4-2-0 (3-1-0 GSC).

West Florida threatened to take an early lead in the contest as the Argos were awarded a penalty kick in the 23rd minute, but freshman goalkeeper Will Carpenter rose to the challenge and made the save with a diving stop to his left to keep the game scoreless.

The big stop – one of eight on the day Carpenter would make – provided a spark for the Chargers, and it resulted in a score seven minutes later as Yuri Ivanov crossed it in towards the far post, and Anthony Benitez found himself able to dive and head the ball in to produce a 1-0 advantage for the visitors in the 30th minute.

The score would remain that way until the 41st minute when Lucas Williams would level the affair at 1-1.

The momentum generated by that score would carry through the halftime break and into the second stanza in which the home side grabbed the lead just 45 seconds into the second 45 minutes with a Fernando Silveira strike. Nick Salafrio then would score in the 75th minute before Dillon Gallet finished the scoring in the 83rd to produce the 4-1 final.

West Florida owned an 18-8 advantage in shots on the day, including a 9-1 difference in the second half, while the Chargers held a 4-3 edge in corners.

UAH will look to right the ship as it continues GSC play on the road when it travels to Delta State and Christian Brothers next weekend.
