Lady Chargers Drop Heartbreaker at UNA

Box Score FLORENCE, Ala. | A furious North Alabama comeback resulted in a tough Gulf South Conference setback for the University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon as UAH fell 82-79 to host UNA at Flowers Hall. The loss drops UAH to 9-7 (4-6 GSC), while UNA improves to 10-6 (5-5 GSC).
 
Jasmine Hammon was impressive in the contest, scoring 27 and grabbing nine rebounds in her final trip to Florence. In her four career games at Flowers Hall, the Muscle Shoals, Ala., native averaged 20 points per contest at UNA.
 
Also strong in the game for UAH was Juanice Newton as she recorded her team-best fourth double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds including eight on the offensive glass, helping the Lady Chargers outscore UNA in second-chance points by a 20-8 clip.
 
Jennifer Towne led the Lions as she finished with 35 points on the strength of a 14-for-20 showing from the floor.
 
The Lady Chargers led throughout the vast majority of the contest, building up as much as a 14-point advantage in the first half with Hammon scoring 14 of her points in the period while Newton almost had the double-double feat accomplished in the period with 10 points and nine rebounds.
 
After holding a 48-40 edge at the half, UAH would continue to lead through the second half and enjoyed a 75-69 advantage after Jordan Smith scored two of her 10 points on the night at the 5:42 mark. From that point, however, UNA would go on a 10-2 run that would provide the hosts with the lead for the first time in the contest with just under a minute left in the game.
 
The Lions would go up by four at 81-77 with 42 seconds left, but UNA struggled at the charity stripe down the stretch, giving the Lady Chargers two opportunities to tie the contest with a pair of 3-point attempts  that unfortunately would not fall as UNA held on the for the win.
 
For the contest, UAH shot 35.8 percent while UNA used a 62.5 percent showing in the second stanza to finish the day shooting 50.9 percent.
 
The Lady Chargers will continue life on the road on Thursday when they travel to Christian Brothers for a 5 p.m. contest in Memphis.
