Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

De Smedt's Strike Lifts UAH to 1-0 Win Over Shorter

HUNTSVILLE | Leo De Smedt buried a free kick late in the game, and the University of Alabama in Huntsville men's soccer team picked up its fifth straight home victory by defeating visiting Shorter 1-0 in Gulf South Conference action at Charger Park on Friday night. The Chargers improve to 9-2-0 (4-1-0 GSC) with the triumph, while Shorter slips to 3-6-1 (2-1-0 GSC).

With the game scoreless and UAH having just recorded its first two shots on goal of the game only minutes earlier, Shorter was whistled for a foul just outside the top of the box, and the sophomore De Smedt stepped up and sent his shot over the wall in front of him and into the back of the net to give UAH the only goal it would need in the contest.

The strike represents the first collegiate goal for the talented player who was a Preseason All-GSC selection.

UAH posted its GSC-best sixth clean sheet of the season with the victory as Michael Winstone recorded four saves in moving to 7-2-0 on the season.

The Chargers have six regular season contests remaining to attempt to break the program record for shutouts in a season which is eight by the 2011 team.

Holding a wide advantage in shots on the night was UAH who tallied 21 to Shorter's 11 – including a 14-6 advantage in a much-better played second half – and the Chargers also held the margin in corners by a 7-5 edge.

With the victory, UAH kept pace with Christian Brothers at the top of the league with 12 points after CBU defeated Delta State earlier in the day.

The Chargers will look to build off of the victory on Sunday when Lee comes to town. Kickoff at Charger Park is slated for 3:30 p.m
