HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville (0-3-0, 0-1-0 WCHA) hockey team fell to Bowling Green (2-1-0, 1-0-0 WCHA) by a final score of 5-0 on Friday night in the home opener at Propst Arena at Von Braun Center.
Bowling Green started off well with two goals in the first period to take a 2-0 lead into intermission. Mitchell McClain netted the first score of the game at the 6:59 mark, while Kevin Dufour scored his fourth goal of the season in the final minute of the period.
UAH had two early chances in the first, as the Chargers had two power plays that produced two shots but could not find the back of the net.
The Chargers defense kept the Falcons quiet on the attack for the majority of the second period, until Brandon Hawkins put BGSU up 3-0 with a goal at 15:33. UAH produced the most shots during the game in the second period as nine went towards the Falcons' goalie Chris Nell.
Bowling Green added two more goals in the third period to bring the game to its final score of 5-0. Both goals were scored within seven minutes of the puck dropping, with Matt Polkhamp scoring at 1:42 and Ben Murphy notching his first goal of the game at the 6:42 mark. Both goals came on power plays.
Despite the result, UAH goaltender Carmine Guerriero
registered 36 saves on the night and stopped a game-high 17 shots in the second period. Guerriero has totaled 35 saves or more in his first two starts of the 2014-15 season.
Huntsville native Josh Kestner
notched a team-high three shots in the contest, with four other Chargers tied at two shots apiece. Defensively, sophomore Brandon Carlson
led the team with three blocks.
UAH and BGSU will matchup for the series finale tomorrow at the VBC Propst Arena, and the Chargers will be giving away team posters and magnets to the first 500 fans. Puck drops at 7:07 p.m.
