PENSACOLA, Fla. | Winning by a one-goal margin for the fourth consecutive game, the No. 24 University of Alabama in Huntsville men's soccer team defeated host West Florida by a 1-0 score on Friday night. The Chargers improve to 11-2-0 (6-1-0 Gulf South Conference) on the season, while West Florida slips to 4-6-2 (2-2-1 GSC).
Â
The Chargers moved into first place in the GSC standings with the win, sliding three points ahead of idle Christian Brothers.
Â
The game was scoreless through the first 45 minutes, but it was not long into the second half when the Chargers would take the lead as
Mitch Wilson crossed it to
Anthony Benitez who headed it in for his team-leading fifth goal of the year in the 48th minute.
Â
UAH then would prevent West Florida from getting another shot on target, making
Michael Winstone's six saves from the first half good enough for the team's seventh clean sheet of the season, and it provided the reigning GSC Defender of the Week his sixth shutout of the year.
Â
Owning the shots advantage in the contest was West Florida by a 16-6 margin, including a 6-3 margin in shots on goal. The Argos also held a 5-2 edge in corners.
Â
Benitez and
Hermann Bjornsson led the Chargers with a pair of shots each, and both of Benitez's shots were on target.
Â
The Chargers will look to build on their four-game winning streak when they travel to GSC newcomer Spring Hill on Sunday. Kickoff in Mobile, Alabama, is slated for 3:30 p.m.
