LIVINGSTON, Ala. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville volleyball team defeated West Alabama in three sets (17-25, 25-19, 26-24, 25-23) on Thursday evening at Pruitt Hall.
West Alabama (5-9, 4-5 GSC) started out well against UAH (8-6, 6-4 GSC), winning in the opening set 25-17. The Chargers played the Tigers closely and held a 14-13 lead midway through the contest. However, UWA notched a six-point run to pull away and eventually completed the first-set win on a three-point rally.
The Chargers rebounded in the second set with a 25-19 win to even the match with the Tigers. Early offense that included a six-point run aided the victory. UAH completed the win in the second set thanks to a kill by
Olivia Bauman and a service ace by
Shelby Traff.
UAH continued to play well entering the third set. A pair of five-point rallies allowed the Chargers to maintain a 17-14 lead midway through the frame. Freshman
Jordan Morrison was a key player in the third set with three kills over the Chargers' final five points, as the third set ended 26-24.
The Chargers and Tigers continued to play a tightly competitive match through the fourth set. UAH started slow, but proceeded to accomplish three, three-point runs to take a 12-8 lead early. The Chargers faced a late scare as UWA brought the set to a 24-23 score, but UAH was able to complete the win on a service error by the Tigers' Lindsey Ball.
Junior
Haley Snyder had a successful match on Thursday with a team-high 13 kills and .455 hitting percentage. Juniors
Olivia Bauman and
Kendall Knisley added to the UAH offense with 10 kills apiece. Senior
Ashton Baker recorded a double-double with 38 assists and 14 digs.
The Chargers next contest will be at GSC opponent Union on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m.
