MANKATO, Minn. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville (0-6-0, 0-4-0 WCHA) hockey team was defeated by No. 12 Minnesota State (4-2-0, 2-0-0 WCHA) in the series finale by a final score of 4-1 on Saturday night at the Verizon Wireless Center.
The Chargers and Mavericks held each other scoreless through 10 minutes of play in the first period. Minnesota State broke the scoring silence at the 13:52 mark of the first period on a goal by Chase Grant. MSU's 1-0 advantage would hold going into intermission.
Huntsville native
Josh Kestner evened the game at 1-1 with his first career goal at 9:07 in the second period. Kestner's goal was assisted by fellow freshmen
Brandon Parker and
Brennan Saulnier.
Minnesota State scored just under two minutes later at the 11:01 mark to take a 2-1 lead, which the Chargers would never recover from. The Mavericks added to their lead with goals in the third period at 5:07 by Teddy Blueger and at 10:11 by Bryce Gervais.
UAH goaltender
Matt Larose was tagged with the loss, despite accruing 37 saves and a .902 save percentage.
Carmine Guerriero and Larose combined for 88 saves this weekend at MSU.
The Chargers managed a total of nine shots on goal Saturday night, led by sophomore
Cody Marooney with three shots. Sophomore
Brandon Carlson notched a game-high five blocks to bring his team-leading season total to 22.
UAH will be on the road for its next series in a non-conference matchup at Northern Michigan on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. Puck drops at 7:07 p.m. for both contests.
