UAH Ties Northern Michigan in Series Opener

MARQUETTE, Mich. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville (0-6-1) tied Northern Michigan (4-0-1) at 1-1 at the Berry Events Center in the non-conference series opener on Friday night.

The first period featured several chances for both the Chargers and Wildcats, despite being knotted in a scoreless tie after the first 20 minutes of play. NMU outshot UAH in the opening period with nine shots on goal compared to six.

Northern Michigan struck quickly in the second period, as Shane Sooth scored 1:04 into the frame to give the Wildcats a 1-0 advantage.

The 1-0 NMU lead would last just over 15 minutes before Matt Salhany went one-on-one with the Wildcats' goalie Mathias Dahlstrom and scored a shorthanded goal to tie the game at 1-1. Salhany's goal in the second was his first of the 2014-15 campaign and was assisted by Brent Fletcher, his second dish of the season.

Defense reigned supreme yet again in the third and overtime periods as both teams went scoreless in the frames. UAH goalie Carmine Guerriero made 11 stops in the third, while the Chargers defense held the Wildcats to zero shots in overtime.

Guerriero backed up his 54-save outing at No. 12 Minnesota State last weekend with another outstanding performance, as the Montreal, Quebec native posted 34 saves in the tie. The sophomore has totaled 30-plus saves in each of his four starts.

The Chargers and Wildcats will wrap up the weekend series tomorrow at the Berry Events Center. Puck drops at 6:07 p.m. CDT.
