Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 21 UAH Earns 1-0 Victory at Union on Sunday

JACKSON, Tenn. | The No. 21 University of Alabama in Huntsville men's soccer bounced back from its Friday night setback, defeating host Union 1-0 on Sunday afternoon. The win improves the Chargers to 8-2-0 (3-1-0 Gulf South Conference), while Union slips to 1-7-0 (0-4-0 GSC).

With the contest growing late in the 77th minute, Mitch Wilson rocketed the ball with authority from just outside of the box into the back of the net to provide the Chargers with a 1-0 lead. The score marks the second of the season for the senior from Huntsville.

Florent Girardin nearly made it a two-goal lead after beating the keeper in the 80th minute, but his try clanked off the post to keep the game at 1-0.

The Chargers had several opportunities to open the scoring earlier in the affair, starting with an attempt in the 21st minute as Kyle Simmons sent it across the front of the goal to Anthony Benitez who pushed it just right, and the visiting side appeared to grab the lead right out of the halftime break, but an offside call waved off a potential goal in the 48th.

UAH controlled play – especially in the second half – to build up a 14-5 advantage in shots, including a 5-2 edge in shots on goal. The Chargers also held a 7-4 edge in corners.

Michael Winstone registered two saves in earning his fourth shutout of the season. The clean sheet is the fifth of the year for the Blue and White.

The Chargers will be back in action in Huntsville on Friday night when Shorter visits. Kickoff at Charger Park is slated for 7:30 p.m.
