PHOTOSHUNTSVILLE | Five players scored in double figures, the team shot nearly 65 percent, and another strong second-half performance lifted the University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team to a 95-70 victory over visiting Trevecca Nazarene on Monday night at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall. The Chargers improve to 3-0 on the season, while TNU slips to 1-2.
Â
Seab Webster scored a career-best 26 points as the sophomore led the Chargers on the strength of an impressive 10-for-15 day from the field, and
Preston Herring scored 15 as he was 4-for-5 shooting while also grabbing seven rebounds.
Â
Hitting four 3-pointers en route to scoring 14 points was
Ronnie Mack, while both
Spencer Palmer and
Kip Owens added 11. Palmer was a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, while Owens was 3-for-4 from the field.
Â
The Chargers found themselves facing an early nine-point deficit after Trevecca – who was led by Jalen Palm's 16 points – jumped out to a 10-1 lead at the 15:51 mark of the opening half, but UAH proceeded to then go on a 23-6 run that featured a Webster 3-pointer that put the Chargers on top for the first time at 17-16 before Palmer hit a layup and buried a triple of his own to give UAH a six-point cushion near the midway point of the half.
Â
Webster finished the run with a
Greg Gardner-assisted layup with nine minutes left, putting the Chargers up 24-16.
Â
UAH led by as many as 11 in the opening half before going into the locker room up 46-40, and the Chargers opened  the second period on a 10-0 run – including seven more points from Webster – en route to the big second half that saw the Charger lead grow to its largest of the night with the 95-70 final.
Â
The Chargers shot a blistering 64 percent in the first 20 minutes, only to top that with a 65.4 percent performance in the second half as UAH connected on 33 of its 51 field goal attempts in the game, and the team was strong from beyond the arc, hitting 14-for-25 for 56 percent from 3-point land. The UAH defensive effort limited TNU to a 46.4 percent shooting night, and UAH – with Herring leading the way with his seven boards – helped the Chargers outrebound the visitors 25-15.
Â
Behind Gardner's team-best nine-assist night, the hosts dished out 24 helpers on the 33 made shots.
Â
UAH continues play at home this weekend, welcoming Benedict and Stillman for the Gene Lusk Memorial. Tip-off against Benedict is slated for 4 p.m. on Saturday.
