HIGHLIGHTSUSAFA, Colo. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville (1-7-1) hockey team picked up its first win of the season on Friday night by a score of 4-2 over Air Force (2-6-0) in the series opener at Cadet Ice Arena.
The first 10 minutes of play was tightly contested between the Chargers and Falcons, until Air Force's Max Hartner scored at the 13:42 mark to put his team in front 1-0 in the first.
The Chargers would rebound late in the first frame with a power-play goal by freshman
Cody Champagne, the first of his career, with 1:43 remaining in the first. Fellow freshman
Brennan Saulnier was credited with his second assist of the season.
Sophomore goalie
Carmine Guerriero continued his strong play in the 2014-15 season, stopping a total of nine shots in the first period.
Junior
Frank Misuraca put UAH ahead 2-1 at 10:52 in the second for his team-leading third goal of the season, assisted by
Matt Salhany and
Alex Carpenter. The 2-1 UAH lead would hold heading into the second intermission.
Cole Gunner tied the game for Air Force midway through the third period at the 10:09 mark, his third score of the season.
The Falcons' lead would last just under eight minutes, before Huntsville native
Josh Kestner scored his second career goal to put the Chargers on top by a score of 3-2. Both Carpenter and Saulnier were credited with their second assists of the game on Kestner's goal, a single-game high for for both players.
Junior
Jack Prince padded the Chargers lead with an empty-net goal in the final minute of play to seal the Chargers win and bring the game to its final score of 4-2.
Guerriero notched his first win of the season following a 24-save performance on Friday night. The sophomore has allowed just three goals in his past two starts.
The Chargers managed 24 shots on goal in the series opener at Air Force, with
Max McHugh,
Chad Brears and Saulnier leading the squad with three shots apiece.
UAH and Air Force will play the series finale on Saturday night at Cadet Ice Arena. The puck drops at 8:05 p.m. CDT for the non-conference tilt.
