Chargers Drop Tuesday Matchup at TNU

NASHVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team travelled to Trevecca Nazarene on Monday night, dropping a 67-46 decision to the host Trojans. The Chargers slip to 3-3 with the setback, while TNU improves to 2-4.

UAH will now turn its focus to conference play for the remainder of the season, and the Chargers will open up Gulf South Conference action on Thursday when West Florida visits Huntsville for a 5:30 p.m. start at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall.

On Monday night, the Chargers started out strong in the contest and used a 9-3 run to build up a 10-point advantage at 19-9 at the 10:05 mark of the first half, but the hosts ended the period on an 18-10 run to cut the UAH advantage to 29-27 at the halftime break.

Junior Halle Jarnagin scored 10 points in the opening half, helping the Chargers shoot 47.4 percent from the field and 53.8 percent from beyond the arc as she and Dina Saunders both hit two of the team's seven 3-pointers in the half.

The Chargers held a lead just over four minutes into the second half as the advantage slipped away on a TNU 3-pointer by Kaci Britt Bell to make it 38-36 Trojans with 15:41 remaining. The game remained within a 10-point margin until the final six minutes of regulation, but the Trojan's 43.8 percent shooting from 3-point range aided in extending the lead to close out the contest.

Shannon Steinert topped the Chargers second-half offense with seven points and shot 60 percent from the floor for the period. The senior finished with a team-best 14 points on Monday to go along with six rebounds and one assist.

Defensively, Josi Saunders posted a team-high two steals for her first multi-steal game of the season.  Saunders also added three assists and two rebounds to the Chargers effort.
