HIGHLIGHTSHUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team lost to West Florida by a 61-46 score on Thursday evening at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall in the Gulf South Conference schedule opener. UAH falls to 3-4 (0-1 GSC), while West Florida improves to 4-1 (1-0 GSC) with the win.
The Chargers were led by
Josi Saunders who shot an efficient 4-for-6 from the floor and finished the game with 10 points overall. The junior added one rebound and a block in her 33 minutes on the court.
The first half started out as a tightly contested matchup between the Chargers and Argos as UAH trailed by just one point in the first 10 minutes of play. UWF extended its lead to eight at the 3:13 mark thanks to a 6-0 run, before UAH cut the lead to 25-19 heading into the half.
UAH battled back in the second half to tie the contest at 32-32 following an 11-7 run to start the period. The Chargers kept the Argos' lead within four until the final four minutes of the game, when West Florida scored 10 unanswered points to bring the game to its 61-46 final.
Senior
Juanice Newton played well in the second half, totaling all of her seven points on 3-for-3 shooting from field goal range. Newton also grabbed three rebounds in her 16 minutes on the floor.
Junior
Halle Jarnagin posted a career-high and team-best four assists on the night, while also totaling four points.
The Chargers will continue GSC play on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Spragins Hall, when the squad welcomes Valdosta State for a conference matchup.
