HIGHLIGHTS | PHOTO GALLERYHUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team was edged on Saturday afternoon by Valdosta State in a Gulf South Conference matchup at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall by a final score of 65-60. UAH slips to 3-5 (0-2 GSC), while VSU improves to 5-3 (1-1 GSC).
Freshman
Loren Foster paced the Chargers offense on Saturday with a season-best 13 points in 25 minutes on the court. Foster shot 3-for-4 from the field and was a perfect 2-for-2 on 3-pointers. She also added two steals, a rebound and one assist in the loss.
UAH started off well in the first half jumping out to an 8-5 advantage over VSU through the first five minutes of play. The Chargers were able to extend their lead to nine at 26-17 after a 6-2 run with less than five minutes to play in the period.
Senior
Juanice Newton capped off the Chargers successful first half with a layup with two seconds remaining in the half to give UAH a 32-25 lead heading into the break. Newton made both of her shot attempts to give her four points in the first half, while also compiling one rebound and the Chargers' lone block of the period.
The Chargers relinquished the lead early in the second half as the Blazers went on a 12-2 run in the first 3:45 of play in the period. The score remained within three points for the initial 10 minutes in the second half, but VSU was able to secure a 51-41 advantage with 7:57 to go in regulation.
UAH cut VSU's lead to one at 59-58 in the final minute of the contest.
Dina Saunders and Foster aided the Chargers late comeback with nine points apiece in the second half. However, VSU's offense was too much to overcome as the Blazers ended the game on a 6-2 run to make it a 65-60 final.
Senior
Jasmyne Reeves was active on the boards on Saturday, notching a season-best nine rebounds including five boards in the second half. Reeves recorded four points in addition to her game-high nine rebounds.
The Chargers shot well from 3-point range in the loss to VSU as the squad combined to shoot 8-for-17 in the game. Foster, Saunders and
Josi Saunders each posted two 3-pointers on Saturday.
UAH looks ahead to its final home game of the 2014 calendar year next Thursday went West Alabama comes to Kelly Court at Spragins Hall to continue GSC play. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. against the Tigers.
