OMAHA, Nebraska | The University of Alabama in Huntsville (3-14-2) hockey team lost the non-conference series opener to Nebraska Omaha (11-4-2) by a score of 2-1 on Saturday night at CenturyLink Center Omaha.
Sophomore
Carmine Guerriero was exceptional yet again between the pipes, despite being tagged with the loss on Saturday night. The Montreal, Quebec native totaled 29 saves in the defeat while allowing a pair of goals.
The opening period was quiet on the scoring end for the majority of the frame until the Mavericks' Brian Cooper netted the first score of the game at the 18:56 mark of the first period. UNO would hold the 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
Both teams would go scoreless in the second period, but Nebraska Omaha battled to tack on its second goal of the evening at 9:45 of the third by Justin Parizek.
The Chargers'
Jeff Vanderlugt was able to sneak a shot past UNO's goalie Kirk Thompson with 11 seconds remaining in the third period to bring the game to its final score of 2-1, with assists credited to
Max McHugh and
Jack Prince. Vanderlugt now has a team-high five goals in the 2014-15 campaign.
UAH managed 25 shots throughout Saturday night's contest at Omaha, led by Vanderlugt with four shots on goal. Juniors
Chad Brears and
Frank Misuraca followed Vanderlugt with three shots apiece.
The finale for the non-conference series between UAH and UNO is scheduled for 5:07 p.m. tomorrow at CenturyLink Center Omaha.
