PHOTOSHUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville volleyball team finished the seven-game homestand to open the season with a victory over Gulf South Conference opponent West Georgia in four sets (25-16, 20-25, 25-22, 25-23) on Saturday afternoon at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall.

In the beginning of the first set the Chargers were down 9-3 to the Wolves due to an early seven-point rally by West Georgia. UAH was able to fight back and tie the set at 12-12 thanks to an eight point scoring effort over 11 volleys.

With the score knotted at 12, UAH went on a six-point run to take a comfortable 18-13 lead. Junior
Olivia Bauman collected two kills during the rally. The Chargers finished off the first set on a three-point rally from a kill by freshman
Anna Claire Johnson and two service aces by sophomore
Shelby Traff.

West Georgia started off well again in the second set taking an early 13-9 advantage. The Chargers rebounded late in the frame with a four-point run to cut the Wolves' lead to three points. However, UWG would go on to take the second stanza on kills by Amanda Miller and Kendall Williams.

The Wolves kicked off the third set on a five-point scoring run, which was followed by a four-point rally by the Chargers to make it 5-4. The score remained close through the majority of the set until UAH pulled away on a three-point run to take a 22-19 lead. The Chargers went on to take a 2-1 match lead in the end on two attacking errors by the Wolves.

The Chargers came out strong in the fourth stanza notching an immediate three-point advantage highlighted by back-to-back service aces by senior
Ashton Baker. UWG was able to tie the contest at 8-8, but the Chargers were able to score seven times over the next eight volleys to make it 15-9 UAH.

West Georgia made a late comeback bringing the score within three points at a 22-19 UAH lead. The Wolves continued to bring the game closer with another three-point run to cut the Chargers lead to 24-23. In the end, freshman
Jordan Morrison completed the four-set victory with her fifth kill of the frame. Morrison had a team-high 13 kills with a .462 hitting percentage.

Baker had her second double-double of the season with team highs in digs (17) and assists (39).  Four Chargers – Baker, Johnson, Traff and
Kennedie Lariscy – went into double-digits on digs.

UAH will head out on the road for the next three matches beginning on Tuesday at Christian Brothers at 7 p.m. The Chargers following contests will be at North Alabama (9/20) and Shorter (9/23).Â
