HUNTSVILLE | Putting together its longest winning streak since the 2007 season, the University of Alabama in Huntsville men's soccer team won 2-0 over Tennessee Temple in the home opener for the Chargers on Friday night at Charger Park. UAH improves to 4-1 on the season, while Tennessee Temple slips to 2-5.
Â
The victory is UAH's fourth straight, and it marks the first time the Chargers have won four in a row since Sept. 2007.
Â
Wasting no time going in front, the home side scored in the second minute when
James Ballamy played a superb ball in, and
Kyle Simmons headed it in to quickly put UAH on top 1-0. The score for Simmons marked his team-best third of the season.
Â
The Chargers then padded their lead in the 17th minute when
Leo De Smedt fed it to
Anthony Benitez who took off on a clean break, rocketing it to the bottom left of the goal to give UAH the eventual final 2-0 margin. Benitez notched his second strike of the season with the goal.
Â
UAH would fire off 19 more shots in the opening half en route to finishing the game with a 37-6 advantage in shots and a 14-3 advantage in shots on goal. Also indicative of the Blue and White's control of the game, the Chargers registered 11 corners to four for the Crusaders.
Â
Will Carpenter made his first start of the season in goal for UAH and posted his fourth career shutout. The sophomore was not often challenged, but he made a particularly nice stop in the 75th minute to preserve the clean sheet that required him to leap well to his left to record the save.
Â
Looking to continue its hot start, UAH will return to action on Sunday at Charger Park with a 5 p.m. match against Talladega.
