HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's soccer team picked up its second straight overtime victory, defeating visiting Delta State on Sunday afternoon by a 2-1 score to move to 7-1-0 (2-0-0 Gulf South Conference). The Statesmen fall to 3-5-0 (1-2-0 GSC).
Â
The win marks UAH's seventh straight which is the most consecutive victories since the Chargers started the 1997 campaign with 11 wins in a row.
Â
UAH fell behind late in the first half after Amine Rahmani scored on a penalty kick in the 33rd minute, but the Chargers would earn the equalizer in the 65th when
Rafn Haraldsson played a beautiful ball to
Hermann Bjornsson who buried it home to make the score 1-1. The goal marks the third of the year for Bjornsson, and the assist represents Haraldsson's first point at UAH.
Â
Dominating play in the second half were the Chargers as the home side fired off 18 shots to Delta State's four, but the team was unable to find the back of the net again to send UAH to its second straight overtime game.
Â
Just over four minutes into the overtime period, however, UAH would be rewarded for its strong play as Haraldsson and
Kyle Simmons set up
Ian Dempsey who headed it in to spark another wild celebration on the Charger Park pitch.
Â
Dempsey's strike was the second of the year for him, and Simmons moved into a tie for first in points with 10 after picking up the assist.
Â
UAH finished the night with a 29-8 advantage in shots that included an 8-3 edge in shots on goal, and the Chargers also held a 9-3 margin in corners.
Â
Michael Winstone moved to 6-1 on the season as he recorded a pair of saves in goal.
Â
The Chargers will now take to the road for the first time in conference play as they had to West Tennessee to take on Christian Brothers and Union next weekend.
