UAH Claims First Win of 2014 at Home

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville came away with a commanding victory over Miles College to start the 2014 season in the Huntsville Marriott UAH Classic at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall, but fell in the Friday finale to Ouachita Baptist University.
 
The Chargers came out strong against the Golden Bears in the first match of the day, sweeping the first three sets (25-6, 25-6, 25-15). Junior Olivia Bauman led the attack in the first set totaling five kills, followed by junior Haley Snyder with three kills.
 
Freshman Anna Claire Johnson had a strong showing in her first collegiate match, collecting four kills in the second set against Miles. Johnson did not see action in the third set, and ended the match with six kills and three digs.
 
Junior Kendall Knisley and Bauman tied for the team-high in kills with four in the third set. Bauman added four services aces during the game, and ended the contest with a team-leading nine kills. Freshman Kirsten Giles led the team with 22 assists in the first match.
 
UAH maintained their strong play throughout the second match of the day against Ouachita Baptist, despite falling in five sets (25-12, 24-26, 22-25, 25-11, 11-15).
 
Johnson had an outstanding performance in her second match as a Charger, as she had a team-high 19 kills and was second on the roster with 15 digs. She played a key role in the first set with five kills, and, in the third set, Johnson added six kills which were an individual match-high.
 
Down one set to Ouachita, the Chargers completed a crucial win in set four to send the match to the fifth and final set. Bauman led UAH on the attack with five kills during the fourth set, followed by sophomore Rachel Brugman and Knisley with three kills apiece.
 
UAH went on to battle into the fifth set before taking the loss. Johnson produced a team-high three kills, with senior Ashton Baker netting five digs during the game. Baker led the squad with 42 assists against OBU.
 
The Chargers will continue play in the Huntsville Marriott UAH Classic tomorrow with games scheduled against Southwest Baptist at 1 p.m., and Trevecca Nazarene at 5 p.m.
