HIGHLIGHTSHUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville won on Thursday evening at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall by a final score of 62-53 against visiting Gulf South Conference opponent West Georgia. UAH is now 10-10 (7-7 GSC), while UWG slips to 12-8 (7-7 GSC).
Halle Jarnagin continued her successful junior campaign with 13 points to lead the UAH offense, while also grabbing six rebounds and dishing out a team-high six assists.
The Chargers offense was slow to develop on Thursday as the Wolves maintained a six-point advantage at the midway point of the first frame. However, UAH put together an 11-6 run over the final ten minutes of the half to take a 27-27 tie into halftime.
The second half was a back-and-forth affair, but UAH was able to capitalize on successful 3-point shooting to hold a four-point lead with 10 minutes to spare in regulation. West Georgia cut into the UAH lead to tie it at 53-53 with 1:37 remaining.
A 3-pointer by Jarnagin – who shot 40 percent from long range – put the Chargers ahead for good, and the Blue and White closed out the game on a 9-0 run to bring the game to its 62-53 final.
Junior
Josi Saunders paced the Chargers offense in the second half with nine points, including a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe. Jarnagin notched three of her six assists in the second half, while
Chandler Elder and
Shannon Steinert chipped in two dimes apiece.
Overall, UAH managed to shoot 43.2 percent from the floor and an impressive 40 percent from 3-point land. The Chargers succeeded in the paint against the Wolves, outscoring the opponent 22-14 in the contest.
UAH looks ahead to a road matchup at West Alabama on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. in Livingston, Alabama.Â
