Chargers Drop Weekend Finale at Huskies

HOUGHTON, Mich. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville hockey team lost to No. 9 Michigan Tech by a score of 11-1 on Saturday night at John J. MacInnes Student Ice Arena in the WCHA series finale. The Chargers drop to 7-18-3 (6-14-0 WCHA), while the Huskies improve to 20-7-1 (15-4-1 WCHA).

The Michigan Tech offense was active at the outset of the game, scoring two goals in the opening two minutes. Tanner Kero posted the first score 33 seconds into the contest and Alex Petan made it 2-0 with a power-play marker at the 1:17 mark.

Sophomore goalie Carmine Guerriero totaled 19 saves in the first frame despite allowing two quick goals to the Huskies. Guerriero's performance allowed UAH to hold MTU's lead to 2-0 after 20 minutes of play.

However, Michigan Tech started the second period similarly with a goal by Malcolm Gould 10 seconds into the frame, followed by an unassisted marker at the 4:41 mark of the second by Max Vallis to make it 4-0 Huskies. Matt Larose replaced Guerriero after Vallis' goal, with Guerriero finishing at 24 saves on the night.

Jack Prince sent in the Chargers first goal of the weekend at 13:48 of the second from just outside the crease to cut the home team's lead to three, following a strong pass by fellow junior Chad Brears. Brandon Parker was also credited with an assist on Prince's score, giving him a team-high 11 this season.

The Huskies' Brent Baltus regained the Huskies four-goal advantage with a tally at the 18:19 mark in the second period, which Michigan Tech would take into the second intermission.

Michigan Tech put together a total of six goals in the third period by Kero (2:23), Joel L'Esperance (4:52, 12:25), Vallis (14:45), Cliff Watson (16:28), Baltus (19:08) to bring the game to its final score of 11-1.

Larose finished the game with 19 saves after replacing Guerriero in the second period.

UAH posted a total of 11 shots on goal on Saturday night, led by Prince with three followed by Brent Fletcher and Jeff Vanderlugt with a pair of shots on target.

The Chargers are away from competition in the upcoming weekend, but will back in action on Feb. 13-14 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan where UAH takes on Lake Superior State in a WCHA series.
