Guerriero Saves 25 in 1-1 Tie at LSSU

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville hockey team skated to a 1-1 tie with Lake Superior State in the WCHA series opener at Taffy Abel Arena on Friday night. UAH is now 7-18-4 (6-14-1 WCHA), while Lake Superior State changes to 7-22-2 (6-16-1 WCHA).

The opening period was a battle of the goalies as the Chargers' Carmine Guerriero and the Lakers' Gordon Defiel each had nine saves and kept the game scoreless through 20 minutes.

However, Lake Superior State broke the scoreless tie fairly quickly at 4:13 into the second with the Lakers' Gus Correale sending a shot past Guerriero from the slot.

The Chargers bounced back at the 7:46 mark of the second when senior captain Doug Reid scored his first goal on a snipe near the left dot, thanks to assists from Brent Fletcher and Anderson White. Reid now has three points (1g-2a) this season and 15 (3g-12a) in his career.

Both goalies continued to excel despite allowing one goal each in the second period, as Guerriero totaled eight more saves and Defiel added five in the middle frame.

Defense remained supreme in the third period with both squads going scoreless in the final 20 minutes. The Chargers were able to put a game-high 10 shots on net in the frame, while Guerriero collected seven saves to send the game to overtime.

UAH and LSSU would complete the 1-1 tie, going scoreless yet again in the five-minute overtime period. Guerriero made one stops, with the UAH offense adding three shots on goal for a total of 28 on the night. Reid finished the game with a team-high five shots on goal.

Guerriero is now 7-11-3 following the tie, finishing the game with one goal allowed and 25 saves.

UAH and LSSU will wrap up the series tomorrow night at Taffy Abel Arena. Puck drops at 6:07 p.m. CST.
