Chargers Victorious in Series Finale at LSSU

Box Score

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville hockey team dropped Lake Superior State in the WCHA series finale by a final score of 3-1 on Saturday night at Taffy Abel Arena. UAH improves to 8-18-4 (7-14-1 WCHA), while LSSU slips to 7-23-2 (6-17-1 WCHA).

The matchup between the Chargers and Lakers started similar to Friday night, as both teams engaged in a defensive struggle in the opening 20 minutes. UAH was led by the outstanding goaltending yet again from sophomore Carmine Guerriero, who kept the game scoreless with nine saves in the first period.

However, Lake Superior State was able to sneak one by Guerriero early in the second frame at the 43-second mark to take a 1-0 lead, which would last the majority of the period.

UAH bounced back as senior captain Doug Reid scored his second goal of the series at 14:55 of the second as he created space from a pack of Lakers. Junior Jack Prince notched his eighth assist of the season on the score.

The tie remained until the 8:28 mark of the third period when UAH points leader Max McHugh sent in a rebound past LSSU goalie Gordon Defiel for his team-high eighth goal of the 2014-15 campaign. Prince added his ninth assist of the year and second of the game, with UAH assists leader Brandon Parker aiding in his 12th goal this season.

Sophomore Brent Fletcher was able to send in a late empty-netter with 2.8 left on the clock to bring the game to its 3-1 final.

Guerriero was strong between the pipes down the stretch, collecting a total of seven saves in the third period to give him a total of 22 on the night. The Montreal, Quebec native is now 8-11-3 this season.

The Chargers managed 24 shots on goal on Saturday night, led by Reid with four. Fellow senior Jeff Vanderlugt and freshman Cody Champagne followed with three, while four different Chargers had two shots on goal apiece.

The Blue and White are back home for the final two home series of the 2014-15 season in the coming two weeks, beginning next weekend against Ferris State. Puck drops at 7 p.m. both nights at the Von Braun Center.
