UAH Wins Over West Georgia Tuesday Night

HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville volleyball team defeated West Georgia 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-19) in a Gulf South Conference matchup on Tuesday evening at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall. UAH improves to 15-5 (6-5 GSC), while UWG dips to 3-13 (0-11 GSC).

The Chargers started out strong on Tuesday as the squad held a 14-7 lead over the Wolves early into the opening frame. West Georgia battled to cut the UAH lead to five down the stretch at 22-17, but UAH scored three of the final five points for the 25-19 win in the first.

Sophomore Anna Claire Johnson paced the Chargers in the first set with four kills on a .444 swing rate, with the team hitting .222 as a whole.

The second stanza was tightly contested as the score stood tied at 11-11 before the Chargers rallied for three consecutive points to take a 14-11 lead, and pulled away in the end for another 25-19 set win as the Blue and White registered six of the last eight points in the frame.

West Georgia led early into the third and final frame as the Wolves held a 7-4 advantage, which the Chargers immediately reduced and overtook with a 6-0 rally with Kerri Whittaker serving. At the tail end of the set, the Chargers managed a pair of 2-0 runs before ending the match on a service error by UWG's Tessa Watson. UAH won the final set 25-19 as well.

Johnson led the Chargers offense with 10 kills and a .375 swing rate, followed by Rachel Brugman with seven kills and a .545 hitting percentage. Shelby Traff and Giles shared the team lead in digs with nine, while Giles had a game-high 27 assists.

UAH looks ahead to three matches this weekend as part of the South Region Crossover, where the Chargers will play Sunshine State Conference opponents Barry and Palm Beach Atlantic on Friday and Eckerd on Saturday. The Crossover is hosted by West Georgia in Carrollton, Georgia.
