CARROLLTON, Ga. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville volleyball team lost to Barry (7-5) and Palm Beach Atlantic (13-3) on Friday in the opening day of the 2015 South Region Crossover hosted by West Georgia. UAH dips to 15-7 overall this season.
Barry 3, UAH 0 (11-25, 14-25, 16-25)UAH kept the score close against Barry in the early going as the Bucs owned a 5-4 lead before taking advantage of a 4-0 run to vault to a five-point lead in the initial frame. Barry showed early success on the attack with a .361 hitting percentage in the 25-11 win in the first set.
The second set had a similar result as the opening stanza with both squads playing a close score early with the Chargers trailing 6-4 after the first 10 points, before Barry totaled runs of 4-0, 3-0, 3-0, 3-0 and 4-0 broken up by UAH scores to own a 19-7 advantage. The Bucs scored five of the final seven points in the set for a 25-14 win to go ahead of UAH 2-0.
Barry again controlled the third set winning 25-16 to earn the 3-0 victory of the Chargers in the opening matchup of the South Region Crossover. Despite winning the third set, UAH held Barry to its lowest hitting percentage of the match at .222.
Senior
Kendall Knisley paced the UAH attack with seven kills, followed by junior
Rachel Brugman with six successful swings.
Kirsten Giles registered a double-double with 21 assists and 10 digs, while
Anna Claire Johnson had a team-high 14 digs.
Palm Beach Atlantic 3, UAH 0 (14-25, 19-25, 26-28)The Blue and White started out strong initially in the first set as the Chargers led 5-2 early thanks to consecutive points to start the set and a 3-0 run following two points by PBA. However, a four-run rally by Palm Beach Atlantic vaulted the Chargers lead to give the Sailfish a 9-6 advantage. A late 6-0 run for PBA keyed the 25-14 win in the first set, allowing the SSC affiliate to take a 1-0 match lead.
UAH battled with PBA in the second set, with the squads tied 16-16 later on in the second stanza. The Sailfish followed the tie by scoring five of the next six point to take a 21-17 advantage, before putting away the frame on a 4-0 run for a 25-19 set victory.
The Chargers trailed 9-6 in the early going of the third and final frame of the afternoon, but were able to overtake the Sailfish lead at 11-9 with a 5-0 run with Johnson serving. PBA benefitted from four consecutive scores following UAH taking the lead to regain an advantage at 16-12.
Unrelenting, UAH battled to tie the contest at 20-20 with three consecutive points, and then the Chargers able to jump in front of PBA at 25-24, thanks to a pair of successful swings by freshman
Anna LeDuc on a 4-1 run by the Chargers. In the end, Palm Beach Atlantic won the set, 26-24, and match, 3-0, on three straight points to end the stanza.
Olivia Bauman led the Chargers attack in game two on Friday with eight kills on a .278 hitting percentage, while freshman
Haley Hop paced the defense with 16 digs.
UAH looks ahead to a match at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday against SSC affiliate Eckerd to finish off competition in the South Region Crossover.
