HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's soccer team used an impressive first-half performance to knock off visiting Christian Brothers on Friday night, holding on for a 3-2 victory. The Chargers improve to 5-3-0 (3-0-0 GSC) with the victory, while CBU slips to 8-2-0 (1-2-0 GSC).
Â
UAH outshot the Bucs 17-6 in the opening 45 minutes, and though the visitors struck first with a 26th minute goal, the Chargers would close the half by scoring three straight to hold a 3-1 edge at the half.
Â
The equalizer came just three minutes later in the 29th as
Leo De Smedt assisted on
Alex Martinez's strike, and the Chargers wasted no time in grabbing the lead as
Gunnar Oddgeir and
Hermann Bjornsson assisted on
Jordan Wright's team-best ninth of the season to make it 2-1.
Â
The Chargers then solidified their lead when De Smedt played a beautiful free kick just in front of goal where
Rafn Haraldsson headed it in to produce the 3-1 advantage at the halftime break.
Â
The win would not come without some pushback from CBU as the visitors pulled within one in the 64th minute, but
Michael Winstone would not allow another score as the senior keeper for UAH finished the night with seven saves.
Â
For the contest, the wide first-half edge allowed the Chargers to hold a 23-17 edge in shots, but CBU would register nine shots on goal compared to five for UAH.
Â
Corners in the match were even at 5-5.
Â
UAH will look to remain unbeaten in conference play on Sunday when Union visits Charger Park with kick-off slated for 3 p.m.
