ROME, Ga. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's soccer team took over sole possession of first place in the Gulf South Conference on Friday, knocking off Shorter 1-0 in a road win for the Chargers. Extending its win streak to six games, UAH improves to 7-3-0 (5-0-0 GSC) with the victory, while Shorter slips to 3-6-1 (1-2-0 GSC).
 
With West Alabama drawing at Lee on Friday afternoon, the Chargers moved two points ahead of the Tigers with 15 to UWA's 13. Lee is also unbeaten but has played just three conference games to sit on seven points.
 
UAH will meet LU in a pivotal contest on Sunday with kick-off in Cleveland, Tennessee, set for 3:30 p.m. CDT.
 
An impressive performance in goal by Michael Winstone helped preserve the win for the visiting side as the senior keeper made a season-best eight saves while notching his fifth shutout of the season.
 
All five shutouts have come in the team's past six games.
 
Additionally, the team's six clean sheets on the season sit just two off the program record of eight set by the 2011 squad.
 
The strong defensive performance allowed the only goal of the game to be the game-winner, and it came from the work of two freshmen as Jon Michael Stern assisted on Guy Clennett's score in the 27th minute.
 
For Clennett, the goal was his second of the year, and the point on the assist was also Stern's second.
 
The hosts held the advantage at the end of the 90 minutes in shots by an 18-10 margin including an 8-4 difference in shots on goal. The Hawks also earned four corners to UAH's one but were unable to push one past Winstone.
