ROME, Ga. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville volleyball team lost to fifth-seeded Shorter by a score of 3-1 (25-14, 17-25, 16-25, 26-28) on Tuesday afternoon in the opening matchup of the 2015 Gulf South Conference Championships. UAH ends the 2015 campaign with a 19-15 overall record.
Freshman
Anna LeDuc paced the UAH attack with 14 kills on a .237 hitting percentage, with sophomore
Anna Claire Johnson joining LeDuc in double-digits with 12 kills of her own. Defensively,
Haley Hop registered 24 digs to lead the squad, while
Kirsten Giles and
Kennedie Lariscy each added 13 scoops.
The Chargers offense was clicking on all cylinders early on Tuesday evening at Shorter, as the Blue and White maintained a 9-1 lead at the outset of the opening set. UAH went on to add a pair of 4-0 rallies in the stanza en route to a dominant 25-14 win in the first set.
However, the Hawks would rebound to win the second to tie the match at 1-1 with a 25-17 victory in the set. UAH and SU were tied early into the frame, but the hosts generated a late 5-0 run to make it 24-16 to seal the set win.
Shorter continued to gain momentum after the second-set victory, as the Hawks broke the 1-1 tie with a 25-16 win in the third frame for a 2-1 advantage in the contest.
UAH would battle throughout the majority of the fourth and final frame, tabulating a late 5-0 run to tie the stanza at 22-22. A key kill by senior
Kendall Knisley gave the Chargers a 25-24 edge for a moment, but, after the Hawks again tied the frame at 26-26, Shorter was able to notch the final two points for the 28-26 win in the set and the 3-1 match victory.
The GSC tournament will move on to Pensacola, Florida, where West Florida (1) will host Shorter (4) on Saturday at 1:30 p.m., while Valdosta State (3) will take on North Alabama (2) at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. The winner of each match will go on to the GSC Championship game on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
