UAH Drops Overtime Decision in Opener at No. 15 BGSU

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio | The University of Alabama in Huntsville hockey team dropped an overtime decision to No. 15 Bowling Green by a score of 3-2 on Friday night at the BGSU Ice Arena to open the two-game WCHA series. UAH dips to 3-5-1 (2-4-1 WCHA), while BGSU improves 6-3-3 (3-2-2 WCHA).

The Chargers offense was led by senior Chad Brears and freshman Jetlan Houcher with one goal apiece, while Madison Dunn, Kurt Gosselin, Josh Kestner, and Max McHugh each picked up a point with an assist on Friday.

After a scoreless first 10 minutes of the contest, Bowling Green's Kevin Dufour sent in the first goal of the game at 10:04 of the opening with assists from Shane Bednard and Mark Friedman on the power-play tally to give the Falcons an early 1-0 lead.

The remainder of the first period and the entirety of the second went scoreless, with BGSU clinging to a 1-0 advantage through 20 minutes of play. Junior Matt Larose received the nod in goal tonight, compiling six saves in the first and a game-high nine stops in the scoreless second.

The Chargers ended the Falcons shutout bid shortly into the third period at 1:34 as Brears netted his third goal of the season on a power-play chance thanks to feeds from McHugh and Gosselin.

However, Bowling Green was able to take another lead in the contest with a power-play goal by Brett D'Andrea at 6:52 of the third, but Houcher was able to equalize the contest with his second career goal with Huntsville native Kestner and Dunn dishing off to the freshman on the power play to make it a 2-2 tie.

The 2-2 tie would hold through the end of the third period, with Bowling Green taking the contest by a final score of 3-2 in the first overtime period at 2:52 with a marker by Brandon Hawkins on a man-advantage.

Larose's record dips to 1-2-0 with the loss, despite finishing the matchup with 25 saves in net for the Blue and White.

Overall, the Chargers managed 18 shots on goal in the contest in comparison to the Falcons 28 shots on target.

UAH and Bowling Green will matchup again tomorrow for the series finale at the BGSU Ice Arena. Puck drops at 6:07 p.m. on Saturday.
