HUNTSVILLE | Five players scored in double figures on Monday night, leading The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team to a big win over visiting Lane at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall as the Chargers were 103-55 winners. UAH improves to 3-1 on the season, and Lane slips to 0-3.
Freshman
Baylee Johnson paced the quintet of double-figure scorers, coming off the bench to go 5-for-6 from the field – including three 3-pointers – to score 19, while
Josi Saunders also hit three triples to tally 15. A perfect 7-for-7 showing at the charity stripe helped
Dina Saunders scored 14,
Chandler Elder notched a double-double with 13 points and 10 assists, and
Loren Foster nailed four treys to score 12.
The 10 assists by Elder marked the highest for a Charger since former Charger great Jordan Smith dished out 10 against Oakland City on Feb. 20, 2012.
The Chargers shot the ball extraordinarily well on the evening, registering a field goal mark of 65.3 percent including a stunning 16-for-23 from long range for a 69.6 percent rate from 3-point land, and the squad was especially terrific beyond the arc in the first half when the team hit 11 of its 13 3-point attempts.
In addition to the strong perimeter night, UAH also was solid inside as the team outscored Lane in the paint by a 32-12 margin.
After trailing by three early, the Chargers proceeded to dominate the rest of the opening half with a
Josi Saunders trey at the buzzer at the end of the first quarter creating a 14-point advantage at 25-11, and the hosts scored 27 more points in the second frame to hold a commanding 52-30 lead at the halftime break.
The lead then expanded to as many as 49 points in the second half as UAH ran away with the victory.
Defensively, UAH limited the visitors to a shooting performance of just 24.6 percent with Tashara Jones leading the Dragons with a 20-point showing.
With
Halle Jarnagin's nine boards leading the way, UAH outrebounded the Dragons by a 42-40 clip, though the visiting team did enjoy a 19-3 advantage in second-chance points.
UAH will now be off until Dec. 2 when the Chargers will open up conference play on the road the West Florida-Valdosta State swing before returning home on Dec. 10 when West Alabama visits for the first GSC home game of the season.
