PHOTOS | HIGHLIGHTSHUNTSVILLE | Five players scored in double figures on Thursday night, leading The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team to a 100-97 victory over visiting Shorter at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall. The Chargers improve to 7-3 (4-1 Gulf South Conference), while the Hawks drop to 5-5 (1-4 GSC).
Â
Brandon Roberts was an impressive 8-for-10 from the field to score a team-best 23 points, helping UAH hit the century mark for the second time in four games, and
Tanner Finley was also stellar on the night, knocking down six 3-pointers on his way to scoring 18.
Â
Justin Ward,
Greg Gardner, and
Preston Herring all had 14 points to round out UAH's double-figure scoring contingent. Narrowly missing out on a double-double was Gardner as he dished out nine assists, and Herring led the team on the glass with six boards.
Â
UAH started out of the gates strong and outscored the visitors 52-38 in the opening 20 minutes to hold a 14-point advantage at the halftime break, but the Hawks would start the second half on an 11-2 run to narrow the gap to just five at 54-49 while setting the tone for what would prove to be an exciting second half.
Â
The Hawks could never take the lead in the period, but a Cole Birchfield trey with just under nine minutes left in the game tied the contest at 75-75. A response from UAH followed as Finley scored nine and Roberts added six in the next three minutes to push the hosts back up by eight at 90-82 with 5:59 on the clock.
Â
Shorter then would pull to within two on a pair of occasions in the final two minutes but a Gardner triple and a successful trip to the charity stripe for Saxton helped hold off the comeback effort.
Â
Both teams shot the ball well in the contest as UAH connected on 59.6 percent of its attempts, using an 11-for-13 showing from beyond the arc in the second half to finish the night 17-for-31 on 3-pointers, and the Hawks shot 55.4 percent overall as Phil Taylor led the way with 23 points.
Â
The Hawks held a slim edge on the glass, outrebounding the Chargers 31-30.
Â
UAH will now wrap-up the pre-holidays slate on Saturday, staying in conference play when Lee visits for a 4 p.m. tilt in Huntsville.
