No. 12 UAH Completes Sweep with Pair of Wins

PHOTOS
HUNTSVILLE | The 12th-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team started out Gulf South Conference action with a series sweep of West Georgia after defeating UWG 3-2 and 11-0 on Saturday afternoon at Charger Park. UAH improves to 8-3 (3-0 GSC) with the victories, while UWG falls to 3-8 (0-3 GSC).

Brianna Sullivan led the Chargers on the day as she was one of two UAH players to record three hits in the doubleheader, and she also recorded a team-best four RBI including driving in all three runs in the day's first game.

In that contest, the hosts had to come from behind twice to win as West Georgia took advantage of a strong wind to record a pair of solo home runs.

The first came in the top of the third when Randi Phillips homered to left, but Sullivan legged out an infield single in the bottom half of the inning with two outs, allowing Kailtyn Bannister to score and knot the game at 1-1.

The Wolves, however, went right back in front in the fourth as Amanda Voyles hit a long fly to center, and the 2-1 lead would stand until the fifth inning.

After Victoria Frith recorded one of the three hits she had on the day, the Chargers had runners at second and third with two away in the frame, and Sullivan again pulled through in the clutch as she double into the gap in left center to plate both Frith and Haley Thompson, putting UAH ahead 3-2.

Kimberly Jack (2-1) proceeded to pick up three of her five strikeouts in the next two innings to preserve the victory. Jack went the distance, scattering four hits and walking none while allowing just the two runs.

In the day's second game, the Chargers jumped ahead 2-0 after Sullivan singled in a run and Perri Gilbert recorded a sacrifice fly, and a leadoff homer from Tyler Harrison – her first of the season – started what would be a three-run inning in the third as UAH went in front 5-0.

UAH then exploded for six runs in the fourth to win the contest in five innings.

The bomb from Harrison (4-0) aided her own cause as the sophomore won her fourth game of the season while recording her third complete game shutout. She struck out two and gave up just three hits in earning the win.

Kailtyn Bannister led UAH offensively in the contest, picking up two of UAH's 11 hits while knocking in three runs. Morgan Hopkins, Michal Robertson, Abby Roberts and Thompson also each had an RBI in the nightcap.

The Chargers will continue GSC play next weekend when the team hits the road for the first time this season. The three-game set at Lee starts on Saturday with a 2 p.m. CST doubleheader in Cleveland, Tennessee.
