UAH Falls to UNA on Regular Season's Last Day

FLORENCE, Ala. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team traveled to rival North Alabama on Saturday, dropping a 76-64 decision on the regular season's last day. The Chargers end the regular season at 11-17 (8-14 Gulf South Conference), while UNA finishes at 15-11 (12-10 GSC).

UAH will now turn its attention to the 2015 GSC Women's Basketball Championships as the eighth-seeded Chargers will travel to top seed Union for a 7 p.m. contest on Tuesday night.

Halle Jarnagin led the way for UAH on the day as she registered her second double-double of the season with 21 points and 10 rebounds, and she was joined in double figures by Shannon Steinert who scored 13 on the strength of three 3-pointers and Dina Saunders who chipped in with 10.

The first half featured six lead changes and four ties, but the Chargers – behind a 13-point showing from Jarnagin and 11 points from Steinert – would hold as much as a 10-point advantage in the opening stanza en route to leading 38-31 at the break after shooting 40.5 percent from the floor.

The hosts, however, ripped off a 20-6 run to start the second half, and that run was punctuated by 10 straight UNA points as the Lions went up 51-44 at the 12:46 mark of the half. UAH was then unable to narrow the gap any closer than five as North Alabama led by as many as 14 points down the stretch.

For the game, UAH shot 36.5 percent while UNA connected on 58.3 percent of its attempts in its strong second half on its way to finish the game shooting 47.3 percent. Behind Jarnagin's strong showing, the Chargers outrebounded the hosts by a 36-34 margin.

The contest featured 53 fouls as UNA was 20-for-29 at the charity stripe, while the visitors were 23-for-32 in free throw opportunities.
