UAH Splits on Second Day of 2015 Charger Chillout

HUNTSVILLE | The 12th-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team split the second day of competition at the 2015 Charger Chillout, defeating Maryville 10-2 in six innings before stumbling to No. 21 Indianapolis by a 3-2 score. The Chargers move to 3-1 on the season with Saturday's outcomes.

The win against Maryville moves UAH head coach Les Stuedeman to 897 for her career.

In that contest, the Chargers totaled 13 hits to Maryville's six while taking advantage of four errors by the Saints to secure the run-rule victory.

UAH jumped ahead early, posting a four-run top of the first with Tyler Harrison, Kaitlyn Bannister, Haley Thompson and Abby Roberts all recording run-producing hits in the frame. Bannister's RBI hit was a double, while Thompson picked up UAH's first triple of the season.

The lead grew to 5-0 in the second when Harrison notched her second RBI of the day with a base hit up the middle that plated Brianna Sullivan, and a pair of errors led to Emily Glover and Victoria Crumpton scoring in the third to put the Chargers ahead comfortably at 7-0.

Though Maryville would score two of its own in its half of the third, UAH immediately answered with a two-run fourth as Glover singled in Morgan Hopkins and Haley Thompson, and the final run of the contest came in the sixth as Michal Robertson recorded a sacrifice fly to score Roberts and create the eight-run margin.

Kimberly Jack (1-0) picked up the win in the circle for the Chargers after relieving starter Taylor Doriety in the third inning. Jack gave up just two hits in 3.1 innings while also striking out three.

Both Roberts and Glover led UAH offensively, picking up three hits each, while Tyler Harrison picked up a pair. Glover and Harrison both also drove in a pair of runs.

In the loss to Indianapolis, the Greyhounds struck first with a two-run homer off of Glover (1-1) in the bottom of the first inning, and the 2-0 score would stand until the sixth when Glover helped her own cause with a two-run single to right to score Thompson and Bannister, tying the game at 2-2.

The deadlock was short-lived, however, as Indianapolis went right back ahead in the bottom of the sixth to ultimately win the game.

Hits in the contest were even at 6-6 as six different Chargers recorded one in the game.

The Chargers are back in action on Sunday when they close out play at the Chillout with Southern Indiana and No. 9 North Georgia at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
