HUNTSVILLE | The 12th-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team split on the final day of the 2015 Charger Chillout, falling 3-2 to Southern Indiana before turning around to defeat No. 9 North Georgia 2-0 thanks to a masterful performance in the circle by
Tyler Harrison.
Â
The Chargers move to 4-2 on the season. Southern Indiana completed the weekend at a perfect 6-0, while UNG was 5-1 in the Rocket City.
Â
In the victory over the Nighthawks, Harrison (1-0) threw her second career complete game shutout, taking a no-hitter into the fourth on her way to giving up just three in the contest. The sophomore struck out two while walking just a pair.
Â
UAH took the lead early as
Savannah Smith singled to score
Victoria Frith in the first, and the insurance run for the Chargers came in the top half of the seventh when
Michal Robertson doubled to start the inning before scoring on
Kaitlyn Bannister's base hit to make it 2-0 in favor of the Blue and White.
Â
Harrison then worked around a pair of one-out singles in the seventh to seal the contest.
Â
Recording the other hit for the Chargers in the game was
Brianna Sullivan, while Frith drew a pair of walks to twice reach base.
Â
In the setback to USI, the Chargers were outhit 8-4 by the Eagles as Frith recorded a pair, while Sullivan and
Emily Glover both added one each.
Â
Glover's was a two-run jack in the fifth that broke what was a scoreless tie to that point, but the 2-0 lead for the Chargers would not last as Southern Indiana responded with three runs in the top of the sixth and then held on for the win.
Â
Kimberly Jack (0-1) was charged with the loss, entering the game in the sixth inning and surrendering two hits and the one run – which was unearned. Glover started the game for the Chargers, scattering six hits in 5.1 innings while striking out seven.
Â
Brooke Harmening (3-0) went the distance for the Eagles to earn the complete game victory.
Â
The Chargers will continue play on Thursday when the team heads to Charger Park for the season's home opener, welcoming Nova Southeastern for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
