PENSACOLA, Fla. | The eighth-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team picked up another doubleheader sweep on Saturday, cruising past West Florida 7-0 in the first game before using a come-from-behind performance to win 6-4 in the nightcap.
Â
The Chargers move to 15-5 (10-2 Gulf South Conference), while UWF slips to 6-19 (3-11 GSC).
Â
In the day's first game,
Kimberly Jack (7-1) was once again masterful in the circle, carrying a no-hitter into the sixth inning of her fourth straight complete game victory. The junior ended the contest allowing just two hits while striking out one, and Jack did not allow a run for the sixth time this season.
Â
That performance would have allowed UAH's three-run third inning to be enough, and the big inning was sparked by a two-run single off the bat of
Kaitlyn Bannister who improved her team-leading RBI total to 25 on the day.
Â
UAH – who outhit UWF 9-2 in the first game – then added onto the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth with
Haley Thompson and
Victoria Frith both driving in runs in the inning, and the Chargers scored twice more in the sixth to create the 7-0 final.
Â
Victoria Crumpton joined Thompson and Frith with a pair of hits in the contest, and both
Savannah Smith and Thompson scored twice in the game.
Â
In the second game, the Chargers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when
Tyler Harrison drove in Frith on a groundout, but West Florida quickly answered back with three runs in the bottom half of the first and another run in the second to take a 4-1 advantage.
Â
After
Taylor Doriety entered the game in relief of Harrison in the circle in the first, the sophomore settled things down, only giving up three hits and one run in the next 4.1 innings, allowing UAH to tie the contest in the sixth inning.
Â
Crumpton drove in the first run of the inning, and Frith – who went 4-for-4 in the game – then produced the game-tying hit, singling in
Morgan Hopkins and Crumpton to make it 4-4 heading into the bottom of the sixth when Jack would take over again in the circle and tossed a perfect frame in the bottom half.
Â
Bannister reached on an error to start the seventh and then moved over to second after a
Michal Robertson sacrifice bunt, allowing her to score on a two-out double by
Emily Glover that was the eventual game-winner.
Â
Adding insurance,
Abby Roberts singled in Glover to put the Chargers in front 6-4.
Â
Jack then worked around a single and a walk in the bottom half of the frame, inducing a game-ending double play to pick up her seventh win of the season.
Â
Glover and Roberts joined Frith in recording a multi-hit game to help UAH outhit the Argos 11-8.
Â
The two teams will wrap up the series on Sunday with the first pitch schedule for 1 p.m.
